Additional Information on Supplements for Treating Liver Disease in Dogs
One of my readers, Armand Nercessian, from Burlington, Vermont, sent me the following information in relation to his experience of a dog with liver disease:
"I would like to share info that may help someone else's pet. Several months ago my Great Pyrenees was diagnosed with Addison's Disease. He will be on the medication Fludrocortisone and, most likely, Prednisone the rest of his life. Both these medications have an adverse effect on the liver, as do other medications.
After much research and conferring with veterinarians, I came to administer two Sam-E tablets (400mg each) and one Milk Thistle, daily, to reduce the effects of the medications.
After approximately 1 month on these two supplements, which are available in health food stores, my dog's liver health levels are as though he takes no medication. His levels are not elevated in the slightest. They were, at least 10 times the normal reading prior to these two supplements.
The Sam-E can be expensive and should be packaged in bubble wrap dispenser. Humidity and heat nullify its benefit.
The Sam-E can also be purchased online at Health Food sites on the web. These supplements will help any animal (or human) that has reduced liver function due to illness or medications. I hope this will help someone's pet."
